How to install and configure sSMTP on CentOS / Fedora / Redhat

sSMTP is alternativeto Sendmail. sSMTP is a send-onlysendmail emulator for machines which normally pick their mail up from acentralized mailhub (via pop, imap, nfs mounts or other means). It provides thefunctionality required for humans and programs to send mail via the standard or/usr/bin/mail user agents. It is used to sendmail to external email address after authentication with valid mail account.

Download & Install

# rpm -Uvhhttp://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/epel/5/i386/epel-release-5-4.noarch.rpm

# yum -y install ssmtp

Now wewill edit the ssmtp configuration file.

# cd /etc/ssmtp

# vim /etc/ssmtp/ssmtp.conf

Here is the customconfiguration

MailHub=mail.techgyaan.org:25 # SMTP server hostname and port

UseTLS=NO # Secureconnection (SSL/TLS)

FromLineOverride=YES # Force the From: line

Hostname=mail.techgyaan.org # The name of this host

RewriteDomain=mail.techgyaan.org # The host the mail appears to be comingfrom

Root=Bala # Redirect mailfor root@ to postmaster@

AuthUser=bala@techgyaan.org # Your DreamHost mailaccount

AuthPass=myemailpassword # The password for the mailaccount

Now let’sconfigure the Aliases

# vim /etc/ssmtp/revaliases

root:alerts@techgyaan.org:mail.techgyaan.org:25
Postmaster:alerts@techgyaan.org:mail.techgyaan.org:25
Bala:bala@techgyaan.org:mail.techgyaan.org:25

If you would like to change the”From” Display Name, edit the /etc/passwdand modify the user alias

# vim /etc/passwd

alerts:Alerts:507:507::/home/alerts:/bin/bash
bala:BALA:505:506::/home/bala:/bin/bash

postmaster:POSTMASTER:505:506::/home/postmaster:/bin/bash

Before we start using sSMTP lets stopthe sendmail which is default installed on all Linux distribution.Stop sendmail service to start afterreboot

# service sendmail stop
# sudo chkconfig –levels 2345 sendmail off

Move or replace the sendmail andthen create a symbolic link for sSMTP to sendmail with authentication

# mv /usr/sbin/sendmail /usr/sbin/sendmail.orig

# ln -s /usr/sbin/ssmtp /usr/sbin/sendmail

We all done with the installationand configuration let’s send a test mail to internal & external emailaddress using sSMTP.

echo “Sending Test mail to external & Internal email address”| mail -s “This is the test message using sSMTP”bala@techgyaan.org bala@gmail.com

How to take the backup from Windows XP / 2003

NTBackup is the built-in backup application introduced in Windows NT. NTBackup Utility used to backup files & folders without using any third party software, you can also schedule your backup on daily, weekly & monthly basis.

Let me show you simple steps on how to take backup from Windows XP/2003
Start →Run →Ntbackup →select advanced mode
Select backup wizard [advance]
    What you want to backup
    Backup everything’s on this computer
    Backup selected files, drives, or network data
    Only backup system state data
Select any one and click on next
Select the data and click on next
Choose a place to save your backup
Click on browse
Type a name for this backup
And click on save

How to install JDK on Cent OS

Download Java SE SDK 6, just go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp,and follow the instructions to download a Linux Version called jdk-6-linux-i586-rpm.bin, and save it in /usr/java directory.

You may have to create the java directory if it’s not there.

To install Java SE SDK, just type following commands in /usr/java directory.

# cd /usr/java
# chmod 755 jdk-6-linux-i586-rpm.bin
# ./jdk-6-linux-i586-rpm.bin

To verify that JDK6 is installed in /usr/java/jdk1.6.0_16 directory, type the following command to test:

# /usr/java/jdk1.6.0_16/bin/java -version
